Date set for UND football to host NDSU for first time since 2003
GRAND FORKS -- The date has been set for the first University of North Dakota-North Dakota State football game in the Alerus Center since 2003.
The Fighting Hawks will host the Bison Oct. 2, 2021.
The UND football program released its 2021 schedule on social media Wednesday afternoon, April 24.
By the time the Bison come to Grand Forks, NDSU will have hosted the first three matchups between the two schools in the Division I era.
NDSU beat UND 34-9 on Sept. 19, 2015.
The two teams will play Sept. 7 in Fargo during the 2019 season for the last meeting in the foreseeable future as non-conference foes.
UND, which will join the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2020, also will travel to the Fargodome for the first meeting between the two as MVFC members in 2020. That game is set for Nov. 14.
The UND-NDSU football series dates back to 1894.
The last time the two teams played in Grand Forks, UND beat NDSU 28-21 in overtime in the last meeting for the now-retired Nickel Trophy. UND linebacker Digger Anderson stood up Bison running back Rod Malone for no gain on fourth-and-1 to seal the Nickel.
UND has won 10 of the last 14 meetings with the Bison after NDSU won 12 straight in the series from 1981 to 1992.
