Group resubmits petition seeking to protect North Dakota voters' powers

BISMARCK — A North Dakota citizen group submitted an updated petition seeking a ballot measure to protect voters' ability to amend state policies Tuesday, May 28.

The original petition was filed in late April in response to a resolution approved by lawmakers that would give the Legislature input on constitutional amendments proposed and approved by voters. Lawmakers have argued the document is vulnerable to well-funded outside groups.

Dustin Gawrylow, the chairman of the sponsoring committee pushing the proposal, said they updated the language but the goal remains the same. Backers would need to gather nearly 27,000 signatures to put the question to voters.
