Aspen Institute names LATI among top 3 US colleges
The Aspen Institute has named Watertown, S.D.-based Lake Area Technical Institute a Finalist-With-Distinction for the 2015 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Selected from more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide, this is the third time LATI has received the award, which includes $100,000 in prize funds.
The Aspen Prize is awarded every two years and recognizes higher education institutions for outstanding outcomes in four areas: student learning; certificate and degree completion; employment and earnings, and high levels of access and success for minority and low-income students. LATI boasts a 73 percent graduation/transfer rate and a 98 percent employment/continuing education rate among students six months after graduation. The school's graduates earn nearly 50 percent more than other new hires in the region, according to LATI.
President Barack Obama announced April 14 he would deliver LATI's commencement speech on May 8, citing the school's high graduation rate as the reason for the visit.
