West Fargo Fire Department unveils first medic bikes in North Dakota
WEST FARGO — The West Fargo Fire Department unveiled four fully equipped bicycles Wednesday, May 1, that will be used to get first responders through large crowds to people in need.
The bike teams will work with FM Ambulance staff, so if someone needs to be transported or the emergency requires more specialized care, ambulance crews will assist.
Captain Jason Carriveau said the medic bikes would be used during large events such as Cruise Night, which draws about 5,000 people, and West Fest, which draws about 10,000 people
The four custom Trek mountain bikes will carry medical bags and supplies for two teams, each comprised of two paid and on-call firefighters.
In each team, one person will carry a bag that includes a trauma kit and defibrillator while the other team member will have a bag containing supplies for other common medical emergencies.
According to Fire Chief Dan Fuller, West Fargo is the first fire department in North Dakota to use medic bicycles.
He said the EMS teams may travel to Fargo, Moorhead or surrounding areas if requested for large events, such as the Fargo Marathon.
