Hayloft Antiques closing shop, moving and more biz news
HAWLEY, Minn. - Hayloft Antiques, an antiques store located south of Hawley and about 12 miles east of Interstate 94 on Clay County Road 10, is moving.
Becky Olson, who owns the store with her husband, Jeff, said their last day of business will be Sunday, which also is the last day of their moving sale.
She said her husband's job is moving to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the family is pulling up stakes to move there.
They likely will open an antiques shop after they get to the Cedar Rapids area, but they have yet to find a storefront to set up in, Becky Olson said.
Olson said she will miss the big barn that has been home to their business for about four years.
Future unclear for Alco
Alco, a department store chain that has operated in the United States since 1901, recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The company's strategy has been to set up in small communities that larger competitors don't pay attention to, and there are about two-dozen Alco stores spread across North Dakota and western Minnesota.
Communities with Alco stores include Mayville, Carrington, Lisbon and Oakes in North Dakota and Mahnomen, Long Prairie and Paynesville in Minnesota.
Just what the bankruptcy means for those stores isn't clear.
Online reports state Alco is looking for a buyer that would keep some or all of the company's stores open.
Attempts to reach Alco officials for comment were not successful.

Mall workers needed
As the holidays approach, the merchants of the West Acres mall have more than gifts to offer. They have jobs, too.
Dozens of stores in the mall are hiring, with positions ranging from part-time associates and fashion stylists to store managers and other full-time positions.
"Finding enough team members to get through holiday season is an obstacle that almost all of our merchants have in common," said Alissa Adams, senior vice president of marketing and business for West Acres.
Adams said incentives extend beyond pay to things like benefits and store discounts that can be as high as 50 percent off.
